One Satisfying Snack Fights Breast Cancer

In All Health Watch, Breast Cancer, Cancer, Diet and Nutrition, Featured Article

Regular Health Watch readers know that tree nuts are a true superfood. We’ve told you about studies showing they fight weight gain, diabetes, brain aging, and more.

Now, research shows that walnuts may provide another, perhaps even more important, health benefit…

They suppress cancer.

The study is out of Marshall University. It is based on previous research that eating walnuts lowers breast cancer risk and slows its growth.

Dr. W. Elaine Hardman said her team wanted to see if “walnut consumption would alter gene expression” and “decrease breast cancer growth and survival.”[1]

Walnuts Suppress Cancer Genes

The scientists tested walnuts on a group of breast cancer patients. First their cancers were biopsied. Then scientists split the patients into two groups.

One ate two ounces of walnuts a day. The second group, the control group, ate their regular diet. After two weeks, the patients underwent a second round of biopsies.

The scientists discovered that tumors in the walnut eaters were genetically altered. Pathways that promote apoptosis (cancer cell death) were stronger. Those that promote cancer growth were weaker.

Dr. Hardman said the results “support the hypothesis that, in humans, walnut consumption could suppress growth and survival of breast cancers.”[2]

Eat Nuts Every Day

To reap the cancer-suppressing benefits described in the study, eat about 28 walnut halves a day. That’s about two ounces, the same serving used in the study.[3]

You’ll be getting more than cancer protection. Like all tree nuts, walnuts are one of the healthiest foods on the planet Tree nuts contain:

  • Unsaturated fats, such as heart-healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids, which are linked to multiple cardiovascular and brain benefits.
  • Fiber, which increases satiety and helps prevent type 2 diabetes.
  • Vitamin E, which helps stop development of plaques in coronary arteries.
  • Plant sterols, which help lower cholesterol.
  • L-arginine, which make the linings of arteries more flexible and less susceptible to blood clots.

Do your health a favor: Make nuts your snack of choice.
