Beat Anxiety With Two Calming Nutrients

New research shows two popular supplements used for eye health also fight stress.

Researchers at the University of Georgia have found that lutein and zeaxanthin have potent anti-anxiety effects. They are nutrients with few—if any—side effects.

The researchers recruited 59 healthy young adults ages 18-25 for a study called LAMA II. This is an acronym for Lutein, Vision and Mental Acuity II. The participants received either a daily placebo or one of two daily dosages of the supplement: 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin, or 20 mg of lutein and 4 mg of zeaxanthin.1

At the start of the study and again at six and 12 months, researchers assessed the subjects’ psychological stress by measuring levels of the stress hormone cortisol. They also had them complete questionnaires that assess stress and general health.

‘Groundbreaking’ Natural Solution for Stress

The researchers found that both doses of lutein/zeaxanthin significantly lowered feelings of stress and cortisol levels. And they improved overall emotional and physical health.

Researchers said they consider the results “groundbreaking.”

The new study was published in the journal Nutritional Neuroscience.2

Lutein and zeaxanthin are important to eye health because they help people see colors better. They also protect eyes from harmful blue light.

But the nutrients aren’t found only in the eyes. They’re also concentrated in fatty tissue throughout the body, including the brain.

Previous studies have found a strong link between lutein intake and memory and learning. Other studies have found that zeaxanthin affects the brain’s processing speed.

Both nutrients can be found in deeply colored foods. Lutein sources include leafy green vegetables, such as kale and spinach. Zeaxanthin sources include yellow-orange vegetables, such as orange peppers. Foods that contain both nutrients include egg yolks and corn.

Most Americans get far too little lutein and zeaxanthin in their diet. So the most reliable way to get them is through supplements.

Our researchers used these nutrients to develop the most advanced “perfect vision” supplement ever made. It combines a unique blend of potent, research-backed antioxidants and vitamins that support sharp, health eyesight.
