Scientists Discover Three Natural Cancer Killers

A new study has discovered three natural food compounds that starve cancer cells.

Scientists from the University of Texas did something called a “high-throughput screening” of dozens of plant-based substances with cancer-fighting potential. This is a method that uses computer simulations to predict how compounds will affect cancer cells.1

Out of 142 substances, three showed the most promise: ursolic acid, curcumin, and resveratrol.

Then the researchers injected lab mice with prostate cancer cells. They allowed the cancers to grow for 13 days. On day 14, they began treating the mice with a diet that contained various combinations of the three substances.

They discovered that all three compounds had strong cancer-killing properties. But they were even more powerful when used in combination.2

Killing Cancer With No Side Effects

Dr. Stefano Tiziani is an assistant professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. He was the author of the study.3

“We were able to inhibit tumor growth in mice without toxicity,” he said.

Standard cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation are toxic. They cause side effects that include fatigue, bleeding, nerve damage, anemia, and hair loss.

The study explained how the compounds work together on a cellular level to thwart cancer. Ursolic acid, in combination with either curcumin or resveratrol, prevents cancer cells from feeding off glutamine. Glutamine is an amino acid that is naturally present in your body. Without this food source, cancer cells die.4

The research was published recently in the journal Precision Oncology.

Kill Cancer by Eating This

Here are foods highest in the three cancer-starving substances:

Ursolic acid: Apples (especially the peel), cranberries, prunes, olive oil, basil, peppermint, lavender, oregano, sage, and thyme.5

Curcumin: Turmeric, the bright yellow spice commonly used in Indian curry dishes.

Resveratrol: Red grapes, blueberries, dark chocolate, red grape juice, and red wine.

To help prevent cancer, incorporate as many of these foods as you can into your diet. Or take a daily supplement of each. Be sure to choose a brand of curcumin that contains black pepper or piperine, which improves absorption.
