It’s Not the Disease That’s Killing Us… It’s the Treatment

It has long been known that people with osteoarthritis are at higher risk for a heart attack.

Arthritis patients are at least 40% more likely to die of heart disease than people without the joint condition.[1] [2]

Now, new research shows that pain relievers are the culprit.

The study was published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology. Researchers compared 7,743 osteoarthritis patients with 23,229 healthy people who never used NSAIDs.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used pain relievers. They include ibuprofen and naproxen.

The researchers found that 41% of osteoarthritis patients’ increased heart attack risk was due to NSAIDs.

Professor Aslam H. Anis was lead author. “Sometimes the treatment is worse than the disease,” he said.

4 Natural Osteoarthritis Treatments

Here are four science-backed ways to relieve the pain and stiffness of osteoarthritis without drugs that put your heart at risk…

1. Walking. Research shows that brisk walking for at least 10 minutes a day allows seniors to stave off disability brought on by osteoarthritis pain.[3]

2. Fish oil supplements. Researchers from the University of Surrey in England did an exhaustive analysis of 68 studies of diet and non-drug pain management for osteoarthritis. The researchers said that the essential fatty acids in fish oil reduce joint inflammation, which in turn alleviates pain. Osteoarthritis patients can  reduce pain by taking 1.5 grams of fish oil a day.[4]

3. Vitamin K. Foods rich in vitamin K help prevent osteoarthritis and control pain. The nutrient promotes bone growth and repair.

Good sources of vitamin K include green leafy vegetables such as collards, leaf lettuce, kale, mustard greens, parsley, romaine lettuce, and spinach.[5]

You can also get vitamin K through supplements. But don’t take them if you are on the prescription blood thinner warfarin (Coumadin). Vitamin K can decrease the effectiveness of the medication.

4. Low-carb diet. Research shows a strong association between low carbohydrate intake and reduced osteoarthritis pain.

The basics of a low-carb diet are simple…

DON’T consume: sugary sodas, candy, white bread, pasta, potatoes, white rice.

DO consume: meats, poultry, eggs, tomatoes, broccoli, nuts, olive oil, coconut oil, dairy, leafy green vegetables such as kale and spinach.

Don’t let mainstream medicine give you a “cure” that is worse than the disease. If you have osteoarthritis, there are safe, natural options that relieve your pain without hurting your heart.
