When a migraine strikes, the pain can be so excruciating that you figure you need the strongest medicine possible to stop it.
That’s why many sufferers reach for a prescription drug such as sumatriptan (Imitrex) or lasmiditan (Reyvow). Or they go with opioid painkillers like oxycodone.
The problem is, these medications often don’t work. And they can have serious side effects. These include sleepiness, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty thinking.
A new study shows that the most effective, safest, and cheapest migraine treatment may be hiding in plain sight.
Researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine reviewed 13 trials that looked at migraine solutions. The studies included tens of thousands of migraine patients.
Their findings showed that a high-dose of aspirin effectively treats migraines. And smaller daily doses prevents their recurrence.
Dr. Charles H. Hennekens was the study’s corresponding author. He noted that aspirin is far less expensive and comes with fewer side effects than other migraine drugs.
Aspirin Treats Migraines and Stops Them From Coming Back
About one in seven people suffer from migraines. That’s more than diabetes, epilepsy, and asthma combined.
A migraine is different from other headaches. It typically starts with a dull ache that gradually grows to a throbbing pain on one side of the head. It’s often accompanied by sensitivity to light and noise, nausea, and vomiting. Sufferers sometimes feel very warm or cold.
Migraines can last for hours or days and can be incapacitating.
This is the regimen used in the study:
- 900 to 1,300 mg of aspirin taken when the symptoms are beginning,
- 81 to 325 mg taken daily as a preventive.
Aspirin is one of the world’s oldest and most studied drugs. It is safe for most people, but if you’re on blood thinners, check with your doctor before taking it.
Migraines can put you in the worst pain of your life. They can make it impossible to work or do much of anything else. The best solution may already be in your medicine cabinet.
