What Happens When You Skip Breakfast? 2,000 Death Records Reveal the Answer

You’ve heard it before…

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”

Eating breakfast is linked to lower body weight, better cognitive performance, and healthier blood sugar levels.[i]

But it turns out that an early meal has an even more important benefit.[ii]

A new study shows that people who skip breakfast have a much higher risk of dying of heart disease.[iii]

The research was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Scientists followed 6,550 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. That program lasted from 1988 to 1994.

By 2011, more than 2,300 of the subjects had died. The scientists checked those death records against the subjects’ eating habits. The data showed that people who skipped breakfast were 87% more likely to die of heart disease.

Breakfast was found to be even more important to people with a history of heart trouble.

Subjects who had suffered a heart attack increased their death risk by up to 500% if they did not eat breakfast compared to heart attack patients who did eat breakfast.

The analysis was coauthored by Dr. Wei Bao. He and his coauthors theorize that not eating breakfast may lead to higher blood pressure. This in turn can lead to heart disease.

They also point to a 2017 paper also published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. It showed those who skip breakfast double their risk of plaque buildup in their arteries.[iv]

Breakfast Makes Your Heart Healthier

You may have read about another recent study that shows that you can lose weight more effectively if you exercise in the morning before your first meal of the day.[v]

But the science is clear: You should be sure not to skip breakfast entirely. After your morning workout, eat a hearty breakfast that emphasizes protein.[vi]

Great choices include organic eggs, smoked salmon, unsweetened Greek yogurt, and peanut butter smoothies with protein powder.

A study of overweight and obese women shows that a meaty, eggy breakfast maintains feelings of fullness over an entire day, making it easier to avoid overeating.[vii]
