Probiotics Fight Diabetes, Study Finds

Probiotics, the “good” bacteria in your stomach, are widely known for aiding digestion. Research shows they also can boost your immune system, prevent eczema, and even fight depression.1

Now you can add another health problem to the list. Probiotics reduce blood sugar, lowering diabetes risk, a new study finds.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and Cambridge Cardiac Care Center in Ontario studied 80 people with high blood pressure. They divided the subjects into two groups.

Both groups went on the DASH diet, a well-known eating plan designed to lower blood pressure. But half the subjects swapped out items in the diet for probiotic foods. These are foods that contain beneficial bacterial cultures. They include yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, green olives, kombucha tea, natto, miso soup, and pickles made without vinegar.2 3

Both groups saw their blood pressure go down. But the probiotic group also had another benefit… They had lower fasting blood sugar. Probiotic bacteria appear to produce compounds that make it easier for cells to use insulin to convert sugar into energy, researchers said.4

Natural Solution to High Blood Sugar

Dr. Prakash Deedwania is a professor of cardiology at the University of California, San Francisco. He said the study shows that probiotics and healthy eating may be an alternative to taking drugs to stabilize blood sugar.

“These are lifestyle changes that are easy to do, and important for the large amount of the population who have metabolic syndrome or are prediabetic,” Dr. Deedwania said.5

When choosing probiotic foods, it’s important to read the label carefully to make sure you’re getting a product that is unpasteurized and contains live cultures. You’ll also want to make sure it has no sugar added. Organic brands are best.6

Taking a probiotic supplement is an easier way for most people to boost gut bacteria. Look for a supplement that contains at least six different probiotic strains and at least 10 billion CFUs per serving. This is a measure of potency.
