The Superfood That Lowers Your Risk of Breast Cancer

In All Health Watch, Cancer, Diet and Nutrition, Featured Article

It’s a real fear.

Each year over 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer.1 Aside from skin cancer it is the most common cancer among women.  But men too can fall victim.2

Between five and ten percent of cases are from gene mutations.3 And now some women who have tested positive for these genes opt for preventive surgery—a double mastectomy. Even before being diagnosed. You’ve probably seen it in the headlines.

But, as with any disease, having the gene doesn’t mean you will get cancer.

Surgery isn’t your only option. It’s not even a guarantee that you won’t get cancer. More important, there are other, less invasive ways to lower your chances.

A study on almost one million women showed that eating one type of food decreases your risk for getting breast cancer. It’s a superfood we always recommend because of its other amazing benefits.

It lowers your risk of developing the disease by 14 percent.4 Even better…the more you eat the more your risk goes down. This brand new finding is one of the largest studies to date.

Eating this superfood is one of the best (and easiest) preventive measures you can take to lower your breast cancer risk…

Fish rich in omega-3s—at just one to two portions a week—brings your risk down 14 percent.

The study on the 900,000 women was unique. It distinguished what type of omega-3 gives you the biggest benefit. Sure enough, the omega-3 fatty acid from oily fish gives you the protection. The type of fish matters, too. You should eat oily fish like sardines, salmon, and tuna. Plant-based omega-3s had no anti-cancer properties.

And these findings only add to existing research that has found a link between the fatty acid and breast cancer. The fatty acid helps destroy cancerous cells by breaking them down into smaller molecules. That stops the spreading of tumors.

A study in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention found even better results with supplements.

The study showed that taking concentrated fish oil supplements was associated with a 32 percent lower risk. The reduced risk was restricted to invasive ductal breast cancer, the most common type of the disease.

If you have a first-degree relative such as a mother, sister, or daughter with breast cancer your risk of developing it doubles.5 Eat more oily fish! Or take a highly concentrated supplement. Prevent the cancer without the surgery.
